BIODIVERSITY:  IMPORTANCE OF INTERACTION

HABITAT AND NICHE

FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK

Ecosystem Interactions

  • Interactions between and among organisms are important in an ecosystem

    • Biological interactions can be within the same species or between different species

  • Provides a framework for the movement of energy flow in ecosystems

  • Communities of organisms increase the chances of survival for any one species by using available resources in different ways

    • By using different resources, the survival of different populations will increase because they are not sharing the same resources

  • Habitat: an area where an organism lives

    • Depending on the habitat and the community, there may be different interactions occurring

  • Niche: role or position that an organism has in its environment

    • Organisms use their niche in order to meet their need for food, shelter, and reproduction

    • Can also be described as requirements for living space, temperature, moisture, or mating and reproduction
