Lesson 1: Chemistry Recap From Middle School
Chemistry | Matter
Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space
Chemistry - the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
Substance - A single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific makeup (or composition) and a specific set of properties.
Physical Property - a characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance.
Chemical Property - a characteristic of a pure substance that describes its ability to change into different substances.
KEY CONCEPT- Every form of matter has two kinds of properties, physical properties and chemical properties.
Atoms | Elements
Element - a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substances by chemical or physical means.
Atom - the basic particle from which all elements are made.
Nucleus - the very small center core of an atom
Protons - the positively charged particles in the nucleus (+)
Neutrons - the neutrally charged particles in the nucleus. (no charge)
Electrons - the particles that move rapidly around the nucleus and have a negative electric charge. (e⁻)
Orbitals/Shells - Imaginary guidelines for where the electrons are located.
