Lesson 3:  Chemistry Recap From Middle School

Bonding

  1. Law of conservation of mass - matter is not created nor destroyed, only transformed or transferred into new substances.

  2. Chemical Bond - a force of attraction between two atoms

  3. Molecules - groups of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.

  4. Ionic Bond - When one atom gives one or more electrons to another atom in attempts to form a new substance.  All atoms involved have full outer valence orbitals.

  5. Covalent Bond - When atoms share electrons to form new substances and to fill their outer shells.
