CLIMATE PROJECT AND CORIOLIS EFFECT

1 LITTLE LESSON AND 1 LARGE LESSON

UNDERSTANDING THE CORIOLIS EFFECT

"IF YOU FAIL, WE'RE GOING TO LOVE YOU NO MATTER WHAT.  SO DON'T BE AFRAID TO FAIL." - YOUR TEACHERS

FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK:

Notes:

Key Concepts:

  1. Coriolis Effect - When objects or air masses, not fully connected to the ground, are deflected in directions based on the spin of the Earth.

    • It causes air masses and fluids to spin counterclockwise north of the equator and clockwise south of the equator.

    • This is because everything at the equator is spinning faster, relative to everything north and south of the equator.  Think about it.  It’s a longer distance per rotation of the Earth.

  2. Climate - the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.
