Lesson 8: Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic Rocks in Depth
Formed from heat and pressure. Heat is typically provided by magma. Pressure is provided by the rocks around it as well as above it.
Metamorphic Rock Terms
- Foliated - there is layering in the metamorphic rock. (formed by heat and pressure squeezing the grains into lines)
Non-Foliated - No apparent layers in the metamorphic rock.
Metamorphism - Sources of heat and pressure alter the material present.
Contact - Magma burns the rock from below as pressure is applied from all around.
Regional - larger scale version of contact metamorphism. Contact is from a small magma intrusion. Regional is from a large magma base.
Hydrothermal - super hot liquid that performs metamorphism the way magma would. It escaped from the magma as a gas at first, or it could have come from magma heating water from above.
