PHOSPHORUS CYCLE

PHOSPHORUS CYCLE

FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK

  • Weathering- phosphorus is found in rocks where phosphate salts are broken down from the rocks and washed into the ground where they mix with soil.

  • Absorption-

    • Plants: phosphate salts are absorbed by plants through the soil. Aquatic plants absorb inorganic phosphorus from lower layers of water bodies.

    • Animals: when animals consume plants or plant-eating animals they absorb phosphorus.

Recycling of Phosphorus- when plants and animals die they decompose and organic phosphorus is converted into its inorganic form and recycled to soil and water which will end up in sediments and rocks where the cycle begins again.
