LESSON 8:  PLATE DRIVERS AND MAGNETIC FIELDS

WATCH:  MANTLE CONVECTION DRIVING THE PLATES, CREATING VOLCANOES.

WATCH:  MAGNETIC FIELD GENERATION
RECORD WHAT IT DOES TO OUR NEWLY CREATED CRUST.

ALL OF IT IN AN ADVANCED NUTSHELL

FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK:

Lesson 8:  Earth's Inner to Outer Processes

Earth's Magnetic Field - Iron in the Earth's outer core moves around the inner core.  This generates a magnetic field around the Earth!  It protects us from harmful radiation.

  • Magnetic Reversal - When the outer core changes its flow direction.  This causes the magnetic poles to switch.

  • Paleomagnetism - When Iron-rich crust forms, it is magnetic toward whichever way the magnetic field was pointing during cooling.

  • Seafloor Spreading - When new crust is created as magma seeps up at a divergent plate boundary.

  • Isochron - a line of crust that was formed at the exact same time with the same magnetism.

  • Magnetometer - device that detects changes in magnetism.

Earth's Tectonic Movement

  • Mantle Convection - the flow of heated material inside the Earth.  Molten magma rises when it's hotter than the molten magma around it.  This is how lava lamps work too.  It drives the plates to move.

  • Convection Current - The cyclic motion of molten material.

  • Ridge Push - at divergent boundaries, the newly formed ridge pushes the old crust into subduction zones.

  • Slab Pull - Dense crust dips under the less dense crust.  It pulls the plate like a table cloth being pulled.

COMPARISON

In your notebook, compare MANTLE CONVECTION to how a hot air balloon works.  Draw both!
