Lesson 6:  Plate Tectonics over the Continents

Convergent - One continental plate goes under another.  OR One continental plate buckles into another.

  • Continental-Oceanic trench - a deep area right where the oceanic plate slides under the continental plate.

  • Mountain Ranges - when continental plates collide, one plate slowly sinks under the other.  Meanwhile mountains form from both the upward folding of crust and magma seeping up and cooling.  Some violent land volcanoes are made this way.

Divergent - Two continental plates move away from one-another.

  • Rift Valley - a small gap or depression formed right at the plate boundary as the crust spreads.  Example: East African Rift Valley

Transform - two continental plates slide past each other.

  • Fracture lines - Long faults formed by changes in the overall movement of the plates.  These generate large earthquakes.  Example:  California San Andreas Fault.
