Lesson 4: Scientific Notation in Space
Key Units:
Scientific Notation - a way of writing very large or very small numbers.
Prefixes - What we place in front of original units to highlight
The Space Units that Require Scientific Notation
Parsec (pc) - a unit of distance used in astronomy, equal to about 3.26 light years (3.086 × 10 to the 13th kilometers)
Distance - meters (m)
Volume - milliliters (mL) and cubic centimeters (cm to the 3rd)
Mass - grams (g)
Light years - (ly)
Velocity - (m/s)
Acceleration - (m/s/s)
TIP: When converting from one prefix to another (ex. mm --> km), if the new prefix is larger, you would move the decimal to the left. On the flip side, (km --> mm) you would move the decimal to the right.
LEVEL 1
Prove to the board of directors at SpaceX that you understand scientific notation. Here is a series of celestial bodies they've recorded. In your notes convert their sizes to scientific notation.
