Stellar Properties Intro:
Star - Bright object that gives off energy due to fusion in it's core.
LUMINOSITY - Measure of how much energy or light is shining from the star's surface.
The more luminous or powerful, the brighter the star glows.
A star's MASS, RADIUS, and TEMPERATURE determine it's LUMINOSITY
We compare the sun's LUMINOSITY to that of other sunlike stars at other distances.
This helps us determine how LUMINOSITY correlates to a star's distance.
We compare a candle up close to a candle far away to exhibit this correlation. It's called APPARENT BRIGHTNESS or FLUX.
We've created a diagram that compares the TEMPERATURE of stars to the MAGNITUDE of stars. MAGNITUDE is a measure of the LUMINOSITY of the star. We call this diagram the Hertzsprung-Russel Diagram.
