WIND FORMATION GLOBAL AND LOCAL
WHAT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING TO OUR CLIMATE?
EL NINO AND LA NINA
ASSIGNMENT FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK:
Notes:
Local Key Concepts:
Land and Sea Breezes are winds that form due to the specific heat of the ocean vs. the specific heat of land. Pressure differences/differentials form when the surfaces absorb sunlight and convert it into thermal energy at different rates. AIR BLOWS TO WHERE THERE IS LOWER PRESSURE.
Global Key Concepts:
Polar Jet Stream - strong winds that form above the conversion of Ferrel cells and Polar cells (usually near 60 degrees north or south).
Subtropical Jet Stream - strong winds that form up high near the conversion of Ferrel cells and Hadley cells (usually near 30 degrees north or south).
Trade Winds - Easterly winds that form near the equator due to the conversion of Hadley cells and the Coriolis Effect. Easterly means "coming from the east," so they are blowing west.
